you only live when you bleed (breathe)

Introduction Currently, my work uses the media of painting, drawing and photography. With an initial training in painting I moved onto photography as the only medium for several years. During that time I developed an extensive body of work which was eventually exhibited primarily in London, with most prominent shows at the Museum of London and the South Bank Centre. The return to painting and drawing marked a huge change in direction, both personal and professional, with the intention to seek a greater intimacy and involvement with the creative process. Using the photorealist style to begin with I eventually progressed into creating work that was still highly influenced by photography but with a more realist approach.

My work is essentially narrative in content, based on personal experiences, as well as literary and historical sources.
I am currently working on 2 different projects:
"Memory Paintings", is a personal research on family memories, intentionally bringing a sense of history to my work. This project is more than a research into the imagery of

the past and the recollection of memories, it is also about regaining a sense of identity within a blending global culture, when most western countries are becoming alike. The works are based on the family and personal environment of the last years of the Portuguese dictatorship, which ended in 1974. It was a time of cultural enclosure, exploitation of the African colonies, and focus on family, religion and patriotism; the country did not experience many of the outside cultural developments of the 60s and 70s, in the arts or in any other aspect of social change. Having moved to England in 1992, I have had to adjust to a society with a completely different underlying culture and history. In exploring images from the past I am trying to understand and eventually reconcile my own difference.
"you only live when you bleed" is a newer project, started in 2007 and still in progress. It comes from a personal exploration of the deeper and darker feelings in human nature. This has been influenced by my own recent experience of tragic loss and a subsequent change in my own perception.
