I have always been interested in the human desire to impose a meaningful pattern on the world. Perpetually hovering at the edge of the known, nature seems to defy the ever-advancing edge of science, foiling and obfuscating our understanding at every turn. The most transparent illusion of our mastery of nature is the natural history museum and its ancestor, the cabinet of curiosities. In the various manifestations of the modern natural history museum, classification, preservation, and display talks to the ways in which we order and comprehend knowledge. In this project, ruptures and juxtapositions are introduced into the museum space, revealing gaps and discontinuities in the ordered body of scientific knowledge. It's the exceptions to the rule, the mysteries, and the cracks in theories and assumptions that attract my attention, things we cannot grasp directly but only tangentially.
