Kingsgate Gallery presents an exhibition of new paintings by Adam Holmes-Davies. Painted within the figurative genres of still life, portraiture and landscape, the artist sees his work as a means to recreate or reflect upon biographic and personal narratives.

This new body of work is a step forward from previous abstractions to a more pictorial and emotional investigation of subjects with biographic significance. Paintings are worked from a variety of sources: life, photos, collages and drawing. Domestic and familiar subjects such as his bicycle, house plants, easel and even depictions of the artist have been introduced. The artist’s painting practice communicates personal narratives, an internal monolog where ideas and experiences are brought into the studio for study and dissemination.

These new paintings are vibrant in colour with intricately detailed and constructed compositions laying over each other, creating a flatness of perspective and a camouflaging of subjects within the picture plane they inhabit. Paintings are pieced together in their making rather than taken from one preliminary image; different subjects are brought together through a collection of drawing, life studies, photography or abstractions. Themes or repeated subjects between paintings can be found, signifying to the viewer the artists’ journey and creative process, suggesting an intent and value in what is being communicated.
