Alex Hetherington’s practice scrutinizes the context and reading of the pre-existing image, performance, film, subject and the nature of the 'exhibition' using improvisation, re-enactment, commingled materials, synchronization, research, collage and forms of ambiguous self-analysis, the self-portrait and a scrutiny of the ‘reference’. I operate within a framework led by technology, research, process and performance (video, sound, web, blogs, self-publishing, print, film, live art) and a practice that absorbs multiple roles including writer, producer, curator, performer, researcher, artist, editor using these tactics to develop processes through which multiple and complex synchronized outcomes can be reached.

Alex Hetherington is a performance-based visual artist and writer: recent projects include The Colony Room, New Langton Arts and Skank Bloc Bologna, TART, both San Francisco, USA; HOUSE/LIGHTS at Live Art Falmouth, UK; the film UNTITLED (SEXYBACK, FOLEY ARTIST) at File 2008, Sao Paulo; the group shows and performance projects: Meddle with the Devil, House/Lights and Mineral Park, at The Park Gallery, Falkirk, UK; the publication project FOOL'S GOLD, including a screening of his performance work FALKIRK VOODOO, KING KENNY WITH EMAIL SCAM (2008)at The Collective Gallery, Edinburgh, UK; Flit Magazine, Oregon, USA. He writes for AN, Interface and Map magazines in the UK and Shotgun and Stretcher, in San Francisco. Forthcoming include visual art workshops for the group show The Enlightenments, Edinburgh International Festival, August 2009 and a workshop project with the performance artist Franko B, March 2009 at Tramway, Glasgow, UK. He is a 2008-09 recipient of an Alt-W Award, New Media Scotland, a Glasgow Visual Arts award, 2009 and a Creative Lab, CCA, Glasgow, April 2009. He divides his time between Scotland and Northern California.
