My current series of paintings and drawings reflects upon the dialectics of power. With images drawn from both Abu Ghraib and the dramatic works of Bertolt Brecht, the series considers the cyclical nature of torture and violence, the sexuality implicit in much torture depiction, and the dynamics which prevail between those who hold power and those who are subject to it. Stripped of environment and context, I’m interested in how these new, hybrid forms are interpreted. As the series develops, new questions arise: Can seductiveness and repulsion coexist in the same image? Can the language of representation be used to create abstractions? Can Foucault’s ideas of “the docile body” be contained in a single image?
