LU SONG | DAWN VILLA

Opening: Saturday, November 19th, 3pm - 7pm
November 20th - January 22nd, 2012

With VILLA DAWN, ALEXANDER OCHS GALLERIES BERLIN I BEIJING presents the second solo exhibition of the 1982 born artist, Lu Song. Lu Song studied at the University of Wolver-Hampton / UK, as well as at the Wimbledon College of Art in London / UK: through this, he was socialized somewhere between both worlds. This influenced the development of his paintings that have a great technical permeability, a hybrid form of painting that differs from the 'surface-concepts' of the Chinese mainstream. Of course, the artist has remained committed to Chinese subject matter as the subject of his work and formulates a Chinese feeling.

His work focuses on nature and human nature in the context of the big city. Lu explores the contradictions that arise within this tense relationship; the individual feels trapped in the city and wants to escape it. At the same time, living in and with the city seems inevitable, one needs to spend time with it. Loneliness and melancholy meet in the figures of the artist and merge into a mysterious and fatalistic aura.

Lu Song resists the usual perfectionism in China, as he combines oil paint with charcoal on paper and canvas. As he explains, he lets his applications of paint melt together, allowing the developing coincidences, as well as the unplanned accidents, become a part of the concept. Through this, his paintings are not only about nature, they are also a part of nature.
