Luzia Simons wurde in 1953 in Quixadá, Brasilien, geboren und lebt in Berlin. Sie studierte zunächst bis 1978 Geschichte und von 1984 bis 1986 Bildende Kunst an der Sorbonne in Paris.Im Werk von Luzia Simons erhält das Blumenstilleben eine vielschichtige kulturelle und gesellschaftspolitische Aussage. Die Künstlerin setzt sich zum einen mit der Geschichte der Tulpe auseinander, die sowohl im Orient als auch im Okzident zu einem wichtigen Identifikationssymbol wurde. Aus dieser Historie heraus avanciert die Tulpe bei Luzia Simons zur Metapher für interkulturelle Identität, gesellschaftliche Mobilität und Globalisierung.Wie die Tulpe von Asien nach Europa kam, dort durch Züchtung verändert wurde und schließlich in neuer Form zurückkehrte, ergeht es heute vielen Menschen: Sie reisen, verändern sich und wurzeln an verschiedenen Orten zugleich, wodurch mehrere Heimaten entstehen und sich alte und neue Strukturen vermischen. Ein komplexes, internationales Selbstverständnis entwickelt sich, welches dem Begriff der ‚Identität‘ eine neue Bedeutung verleiht. Mit der ‚Nomadin‘ Tulpe stellt die Künstlerin daher auch die Frage nach der Verwurzelung des Individuums in der heutigen Zeit. Was gibt uns Heimat, was stiftet Identität?Ihre Blumenbilder sind keine klassischen Fotografien. Luzia Simons arrangiert die Blüten vielmehr auf einem von ihr modifizierten Scanner, der die Stellen, an denen die Pflanzen auf dem Glas aufliegen, mikroskopisch genau abbildet. Dort, wo es keine Berührungspunkte und einen größeren Abstand gibt, bleibt es bei einer abstrakten Unschärfe. Insgesamt bestechen die meist großformatigen Bilder durch eine außergewöhnliche Farbigkeit und räumliche Tiefenwirkung.Neben diesen Scanogrammen macht Luzia Simons auch raumgreifende, ortsbezogene Installationen. She first studied history until 1978 and then Fine Arts at the Sorbonne University in Paris from 1984 to 1986.In Luzia Simons work, the floral still life takes on a multi-layered cultural and socio-political statement. For one, the artist studies the history of the tulip, which became an important symbol of identification in both the Orient and the Occident. Taken from this historical context, the tulip becomes a metaphor for cross-cultural identity, social mobility and globalization for Luzia Simons.Today many people encounter life similar to how the tulip came to Europe from Asia, changed through cultivation, and then returned in a new form: they travel, change and are rooted in more than one place at the same time. This results in having more than one place to call home and having new structures blending with old ones. A complex, international self-image develops, which gives the concept of ‘identity’ a whole new meaning. With the ‘nomad’ tulip, the artist questions the roots of the individual in modern times. What makes us feel at home, what creates an identity?Her flower photographs are not traditional photographs. Luzia Simons arranges her flowers on her modified scanner, which allows for microscopically exact reproductions of the flowers where they lay directly on the glass. Where there are no points of contact with and a greater distance from the glass, the results remain an abstract blur. The mostly large-format paintings are predominantly characterized by their extraordinary colour and spatial depth.In addition to these scanograms Luzia Simons also makes large-scale, site-specific installations. Die chinesische Künstlerin Kexin Zang lädt uns ein zu einer Reise in eine Terra Incognita: Wir betreten Neuland, eine Zone, die uns erlaubt, zugleich an zwei unterschiedlichen Orten zu sein – im Osten und im Westen – und in zwei Zeiten: in der Gegenwart und in der Zeit der fernen Vergangenheit. Dort begegnen wir den Werken der Künstlerin Kexin Zang, die wissenschaftliche Forschungen mit hoch entwickelten künstlerischen Ausdrucksformen verbindet.In ,Go Weast‘ sehen wir die Portraits ,Die Überhalbhunderter‘. Die über 50-jährigen, die sich jeden Morgen in den Parks und Anlagen Beijings zu ihren Übungen treffen, sind die glücklichsten Menschen Chinas. Wie in den meisten Arbeiten von Kexin Zang sind in ,Locations‘ Bild und Text gleich wichtige Elemente der Gestaltung. Den Locations liegt ein Satz aus der Ästhetik der chinesischen Tuschmalerei zugrunde: ,Die schönsten Landschaften befinden sich in Deinem Herzen.‘HINWEIS: Die Künstlerin wurde von der Jury der Art Cologne 2012 für die Reihe NEW POSITIONS ausgewählt.
The Chinese artist, Kexin Zang invites us on a journey to Terra Incognita: where we enter unknown territory, a zone which allows us to be in two different places at the same time - in the east and west – as well as in two time periods: in the present and in the distant past. It is here that we encounter the works of the artist, Kexin Zang, who combines scientific research with sophisticated forms of artistic expression.In ‘Go Weast’, we see the portraits of ‘The Over-Semi-Hundreds’. Those over 50-years of age, who meet every morning in Beijing's parks and facilities to do their exercises, are the happiest people in China. Like most of Kexin Zangs works, in ‘Locations’ image and text are equally important elements of composition. ‘Locations’ is based on a sentence from the aesthetics of Chinese ink painting, ‘The most beautiful landscapes are in your heart.’NOTE: The artist has been selected by the jury of Art Cologne 2012 for the line-up NEW POSITIONS.
