Kuckei + Kuckei freut sich die vierte Einzelausstellung von Barbara Probst in ihren Räumen in Berlin ankündigen zu können.
Auch den neuen Arbeiten von Barbara Probst liegt die Idee der Gleichzeitigkeit zugrunde: mehrere Kameras, gerichtet auf eine Szene, werden über Radiowelle simultan ausgelöst. Aus den entstandenen Fotografien setzt Probst mehrteilige Arbeiten zusammen, die auf den Betrachter sowohl simultan als auch sequentiell wirken. Die einzelnen Bilder dieser mehrteiligen Arbeiten scheinen unvereinbar und widersprüchlich und provozieren den Betrachter über die Subjektivität des Sehens und des Gesehenwerdens nachzudenken.
Barbara Probst nutzt die bekannten Strategien und Bildmuster unseres Alltags wie das Modeshooting, das Überwachungsvideo, die Werbefotografie, Papparazzifotos, Postkartenmotive, den Urlaubsschnappschuß, Landschaftsfotografie, Strassenfotografie oder das Portrait. In den Arbeiten, die im Atelier entstehen verwendet Probst häufig großformatige Fotografien als Hintergründe, die wie physische Analogien zu digitalen Bildbearbeitungsprozessen wirken. Die Oberfläche der Fotografie und die Tiefe des Fotografierten scheinen sich ineinander zu schieben. Jedoch verbleibt immer ein Hinweis auf die physische Präsenz von Modell und Hintergrund und damit auf die räumliche Tiefe des Sujets. In den Arbeiten, die in den New Yorker Straßen entstehen, wendet Barbara Probst eine ähnliche Strategie der scheinbaren Umkehrung von Figur und Grund aus der medialisierten und durch Bilder übersättigten Stadt, an. Ihre vielteiligen Arbeiten vermitteln den Eindruck als würde man unversehens in ein Filmset stolpern und vom Betrachter zum Subjekt werden.
Barbara Probst (*1964) lebt und arbeitet in New York und München. Das Museum of Modern Art, New York zeigte ihre Arbeiten im Rahmen der Ausstellung New Photography 2006. 2007 erschien zu ihrer Einzelausstellung im Museum for Contemporary Photography Chicago eine ausführliche Monographie im Steidl Verlag. Im vergangenen Jahr wurden ihre Arbeiten in Gruppenausstellungen im Reina Sofia – Madrid, in der Tate Modern – London, im MoMA – New York und im Centre Pompidou – Paris gezeigt. Zur Zeit nimmt sie an der Ausstellung An Orchestrated Vision – The Theater of Contemporary Photography im Saint Louis Art Museum – St. Louis teil und wird im Juni in der Ausstellung Lost Places – Orte der Photography in der Hamburger Kunsthalle vertreten sein.

Kuckei + Kuckei is very pleased to announce their fourth solo exhibition with Barbara Probst in Berlin.
The new works by Barbara Probst are once again involved with the concept of simultaneity: multiple cameras, all focused on a particular scene are each connected through a radio control system and release at the same moment. Barbara Probst puts the resulting photographs together as multi-part works, which seem to the viewer to be both simultaneous and sequential. The individual pictures in these sequences appear to be contradictory and antithetical to one another and provoke the viewer to rethink the subjectivity of looking and being looked at.
Barbara Probst uses familiar images and picture strategies such as fashion shoots, surveillance videos, advertising photography, Papparazzi shots, postcard pictures, tourist snapshots, landscape photography, street photography and portraits. In her studio works she uses large backdrops, which act like a physical analogy to digital picture editing. The surface of the photograph and the depth of that which is photographed seem to become intertwined. Still there is always a clue to the presence of the model before a backdrop which indicates the spatial depth of the subject. In her New York street works Barbara Probst uses a related strategy of inversion of figure and ground in a highly image mediated and overly depicted city. Her multiple images convey the impression of accidentally stepping onto a movie set and turning from observer to observed.
Barbara Probst (*1964) lives and works in New York and Munich. Her work was featured at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in the show New Photography 2006. In 2007 Steidl published an extensive monograph in unison with her solo show at the Museum of Contemporary Photography Chicago. She was also included in several group shows last year at Reina Sofia – Madrid, Tate Modern – London, MoMA – New York and Centre Pompidou – Paris. Currently her work is shown at Saint Louis Art Museum – St. Louis in the exhibition An Orchestrated Vision – The Theater of Contemporary Photography and will be also featured in the group show Lost Places – Sites of Photography at the Hamburger Kunsthalle in June 2012.
