Unit B is pleased to present, "What is a curator?" organized by San Antonio-based artist, critic, curator Chad Dawkins on view May 18-July 7, 2012. This exhibition is responses to the question--what is a curator?--Dawkins sent the email below to 75 artists, critics, curators and collectors with the following opening statement.

I have been invited to curate an exhibition. Given the fact that I do not consider myself a curator, I have found this to be a perfect opportunity to question this role of curator. What does it mean to be a curator? Are there aspects of this role that warrant critique? Are some people better equipped to play this role-- if so, what are those qualifications? To address these questions, I have decided to ask other curators, artists, collectors, and critics if they can help me flesh out some of the details of this position--which hopefully, creates an exchange of ideas that contribute to a critical study of definition and categorization in our specific place in time...
