Counterpoise presents the work of Kingsgate Emerging Artists 2011 residency recipients Ella Bryant, Eva Masterman and Benjamin Senior. Over the last year the artists have developed their studio practices in dialogue with one another and Kingsgate Workshop Trust artists and makers.
The exhibition highlights Kingsgate Emerging Artists’ shared interest in the human body, material and process. Each a specialist in their fields of photography, casting and painting, their work explores the materiality of form and surface and the relationship between figurative and formal elements. In Benjamin Senior’s precise egg tempera paintings, contorted figures chase arrangements of limbs and geometric pattern across a shallow picture plane. The human figure is abstracted in Eva Masterman’s sculptures; the fluted forms cluster together precariously, drawing attention to the negative space between them and the marks of their construction upon the surface. Ella Bryant’s assembled sculptures and photographic images reveal the body in fragments. Merging visceral objects with hand printed photogram’s and self-portraits, the disrupted photographic surfaces and unsavoury textures create disordered human systems, at once fragile and unstable.
Ella Bryant studied MA Photography at London College of Communication. Her recent exhibitions include Salon 10 at Four Corners Gallery, As I Walked Out at SVA Gallery, and she won an Innovations award for her participatory project, Animapping Lambeth at The Portico Gallery in 2011.
Eva Masterman studied Fine Art BA at Kingston Upon Thames University. Her recent exhibitions include Parallax Art Fair at The Mall Galleries and Freaks at Shoreditch Town Hall Basement Gallery. She is also currently on residency at Kingston AA2A.
Benjamin Senior studied at the Royal College of Art and Wimbledon School of Art. His recent exhibitions include This is Tomorrow at Annarumma404, Naples, Ella Krugyanskaya and Benjamin Senior at James Fuentes LLC, New York and the 2010 Studio Voltaire Members Exhibition, selected by Jennifer Higgie and Rebecca Warren.
