Dilston Grove Grand
Relaunch
CGP London are pleased to announce the
Relaunch of Dilston Grove
Opening Event: Thursday, 27 May
from 6 – 8pm.
After two years and a £870,000 renovation
project, Dilston Grove, an historic Grade II listed former
church, re-opens its doors as a spectacular venue for
large-scale presentations of contemporary art. Previous
artists who have exhibited at Dilston Grove include Ackroyd
& Harvey, Richard Wilson, Mike Nelson and Shona
Illingworth.
The restoration was funded by the Cabinet
Office for the Third Sector’s Community Assets Transfer Scheme
(delivered by the BIG Lottery Fund), Arts Council England,
English Heritage, the London Borough of Southwark and the City
Bridge Trust.
The launch presents, in partnership with
Autograph ABP, the first solo exhibition in
the UK of work by Congolese photographer and filmmaker
Sammy Baloji. Mémoire addresses
colonial violence, shattered dreams of independence and the
postcolonial political fallout that exists within the current
Democratic Republic of Congo. A beautifully
crafted and abstracted video, Mémoire is shot in
collaboration with the Congolese performance artist
Faustin Linyekula.
Mark Sealy, Director of
Autograph ABP, said “I have been aware of Sammy Baloji’s work
for some time but this did not prepare me for my response when
he showed me Mémoire … it is a rare and very
special moment to encounter a work that is so
powerful”.
