ART COLOGNE 2011 –
Highlights of modern and contemporary
art
Art lovers and collectors will find a broad
range of modern and contemporary art in all price brackets and
covering all movements. The most exciting highlights this year
include works from artists who will also be shown in some of
the nearby museums of the region, such as Joel Shapiro, Thomas
Struth, Arnulf Rainer, Heinz Mack, Lucie Stahl, Otto Dix, Tony
Cragg. Among others Karsten Greve (Cologne/ St. Moritz/ Paris)
has high-calibre bronze by the New Yorker artist Joel Shapiro
(Untitled, 2010) who is currently shown at the Museum Ludwig,
Cologne; Karsten Greve and Hauser + Wirth (London/New
York/Zürich) will also present works by the recently deceased
artist Louise Bourgeois. Annely Juda Fine Art (London) will
bring blue chip staples including Anthony Caro and David
Hockney. One of the highlights at Rüdiger Schöttle (Munich)
will be a c-print by Thomas Struth (Grazing Incidence
Spectrometer, 2010), one of the most important representatives
of contemporary German photography, whose current exhibition
at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen (Dusseldorf) is a
full success. Bernd Klüser (Munich), whose personal drawing
collection is currently shown at the Von der Heyd Museum in
Wuppertal, excells with a Lenin portrait by Andy Warhol. Andy
Warhol will also be shown by Hans Mayer (Dusseldorf), Salis
& Vertes (Zurich/ Salzburg), and Heinz Holtmann (Cologne).
Florian Sundheimer (Munich), among others, will be showing an
early work by Georg Baselitz (Der Orientale,1959) whereas Fred
Jahn offers a recent work from 2010 (1. Mai, 6.IV.2010).
Further galleries bringing Baselitz to Cologne are: Michael
Werner, Fred Jahn, DEWEER gallery, Bo Bjerggaard, Haas, and
Springer & Winckler. Johnen (Berlin) has work by
important names like Stephan Balkenhol, Wilhelm Sasnal and
Thomas Ruff and will also be showing the sculpture Egg Bucket
on stool with pedestal (24 x 38 x 35 inch) by Düsseldorf-based
Hans-Peter Feldmann (2003). The special feature on Panamarenko
in the fair’s entrance hall will also be reflected in the
fair, hence Kewenig (Cologne/ Palma de Mallorca) offers
museum-quality works of the Belgium artist such as „Japanese
Flying Pak 3“ (2001). Lelong (Paris/Zurich) will bring works
by Jannis Kounellis, who will also be on view in the Galerie
Kewenig (Cologne) during the course of the fair.
Johann König
(Berlin) offers c-prints by Annette Kelm, who won the ART
COLOGNE price for NEW POSITIONS in 2005 and will be shown in
the Bonner Kunstverein this year. The special sectors OPEN
SPACE and NEW CONTEMPORARIES will spotlight cutting-edge
trends in contemporary art. Hence, Jack Hanley (New York) is
planning a powerful show of furniture works by Austrian Erwin
Wurm (OPEN SPACE); Elisabeth & Klaus Thoman (Innsbruck)
will also be offering works from Erwin Wurm. Daniel Buchholz
(Cologne/ Berlin) is putting on a show with R.H. Quaytman – in
his gallery as well as bringing her works to the fair –
together with other artist such as Isa Gensken (Hommage à
Jasper Johns, 2009). The NEW CONTEMPORARIES sector is the
place for young emerging galleries and its studio-fresh art
and experimental work by young artists. Galerie Jocelyn Wolff
(Paris) presents new works by the performance duo Prinz Gholam
- Notman-Boxer 2008. Ancient Modern (London) presents works by
Alan Kane and Des Hughes, Foxy Production (New York) is
showing the hot American artist Sterling Ruby who takes his
subject matter from a wide range of sources, including
marginalized societies, maximum security prisons, modernist
architecture, artifacts and antiquities, graffiti etc.
sterling Ruby will also be shown by Sprüth Magers (Berlin/
London). In addition to Foxy Production, twelve other
participants from the United States will present their wares
at the ART COLOGNE, including Broadway 1602 (New York), Andrew
Kreps (New York), 1301PE (Los Angeles), Team (New York),
amongst others.
The scope and
quality of exhibits in the section for Classical Modern are
remarkable. Swiss dealers Henze & Ketterer are offering
museum-quality masterpieces by Brücke artists. Among the
highlights are oils by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (Totentanz der
Mary Wigman, 1926) and Erich Heckel (Boot im Schlick, 1907).
Düsseldorf’s Remmert und Barth will also bring works on paper
by Kirchner. Galleria D’Arte Maggiore (Bologna) will be
showing works from Fontana and Morandi, among them the fair
and beautiful oil (Natura Morta 1948). The Berlin Galerie
Berinson will present a wide range of early 20th century
avant-garde including works by Max Ernst and Kurt Schwitters.
