The Proposition, New York
AMERICAN CONCENTRATION CAMP Ry Fyan, Nico Dios, Dash Snow Curated by Andreis Costa Using hybridized drawing, painting, collage, and assemblage, the artists excavate and analyze societal remains from the past and present, both physical and metaphysical. Through this archaeology the work challenges trends and theories of the media mainstream. Snow presents large-scale installations that include assemblages of found objects, urban detritus and newspaper clippings alongside nostalgic pop-culture signifiers of past generations. Fyan paints fantasy landscapes using spray paint, enamel and oil influenced by disaster both natural and man-made. Nico Dios draws inspiration from spiritual practice. With Pythagorean virtue, complex drawings manufactured by hypnotic repetition.. Read on...The Proposition, New York |

Our Marvellous Ambition A Tale of Some Straightforward Dressing Down, an exhibition of works by: Brian Griffiths, Haim Steinbach, Josef Strau and Sascha Hahn Using materials and assemblage techniques that elegantly explore and reprocess the references and desires of everyday objects and images, Brian Griffiths, Haim Steinbach, Josef Strau and Sascha Hahn deal with structure, placement, position and contingency; each exploring an economy amongst objects and images. The works in the exhibition navigate the relationship between object and support; object and sculpture; sculpture and display; handmade and mass-produced and social/cultural status and value against subjectivity. Phil Collins In recent years, British artist Collins has lived and worked in numerous locations, including Belfast, Belgrade, Baghdad, and Bogotá. Best known for his work in video, photography and video installation, Collins’ practice often revolves around convocation of individuals. Through choreographing seemingly playful situations and inviting his subjects to actively participate in the creative process of representation, Collins subtly challenges the documentary medium while retaining an incisive political and social dimension. LUSTFORLIFE Sture Johannesson, Mika Taanila, Magnus Thierfelder, Alex Villar, Ylva Westerlund LUSTFORLIFE places emphasis on the joy of experimenting and the use of humour as a means to address and deal with various matters of concern. The works that are brought together focus on the potential of humour as a strategy of refusal by using a curious and inventive manner that play around with codes consistent in our society. The broad field of the visual arts can be a place of possibilities, a space of proposition that privileges the free imagination and the necessity of rethinking, questioning and testing. At the same time we constantly struggle and learn to adjust how to take in information, to classify and rationalize in order to move on. The better we get at it, the faster we can move on, so we learn to take shortcuts and rely on received interpretations. We simply learn how to use the system the way it is designed to work. Sebastian Goegel and Paule Hammer : Hyper
Hyper
Goegel and Hammer seek in their work to use sculpture and spatial installations as media of expression to place pop over the sublime, thus combining a vital, penetrating power with a clever, sharp wit. With all their relics of pop culture, ironic adaptations of kitsch and horror, and apparent homage of chaos, the works of Goegel and Hammer are outfitted with their own perceptual program that consciously plays on the arbitrary in an ironic, nasty, laconic, and defiant way, and employs provocation and sources of irritation in a calculated fashion. Power Pathos Daniel Johnston, Ron English, Gibby Haynes, Clark Fox, and Anthony Ausgang are longstanding icons of the great American underground, sharing much of their defiant DNA and drawing life-force from the same subversive soul. These one-time counter- cultural celebrities have created their own self- aware, yet sincere, mythologies that have propelled them into the mainstream of America and the world. Their art has served simultaneously as harsh critiques and loving embraces of the society that spawned them, art that has been a blend of reality and artifice, of vision and delusion, of power and pathos, five artists whose artistic powers were forged here in the naturally surreal Lone Star state. Through their exploration of cultural iconography, these five artists have come to represent the modern archetypes of the eternally independent spirit, and Power Pathos is a step towards just that - this hybrid: a mythological beast split from art and music, a profound unease between the social disorders of the streets and the disconcerting internal environment of its subconscious. Brave New World Zackary Drucker + Candice Lin + Lisa Oppenheim + Jack Smith + Mark Verabioff Brave New World explores themes of sexuality and power prevalent in the work of experimental filmmaker, radical photographer, and seminal performance artist, Jack Smith. As one of the most accomplished artists from the 1960’s until his death in 1989, Jack Smith’s work explored and developed a deceptively frivolous aesthetic, importing allusions to B-Grade Hollywood films and elements of social and political critique into the arena of high art. labels of "good" technique and "proper" behavior.
